Leader of Opposition: Why the Title Needs 10% of Seats

A party usually needs ~10% of House seats (55 in Lok Sabha) to get its leader recognised as LoP — a convention, not the Constitution.
The LoP enjoys Cabinet-rank salary and perks under a 1977 law and is the formal voice of the opposition.
Real teeth: the LoP sits on selection panels for the CBI Director, CEC, Lokpal, CVC and CIC.
Congress fell short in 2014 (44) and 2019 (52), so the Lok Sabha had no recognised LoP for a decade.
Rahul Gandhi became LoP in 2024 with Congress on 99 seats; states have their own LoPs too.
