The Dead Stars That Refuse to Fade in a Galaxy Next Door
Astronomers found 22 exploded-star remnants in nearby galaxy M83 acting strangely in X-rays.
About half changed brightness over 14 years, when textbooks say they should only fade.
One culprit may be a surviving 'sibling' star feeding a black hole or neutron star.
Another is cosmic recycling: blast debris falling back onto the object the blast created.
M83 lies 15 million light-years away, yet Chandra tracked these flickers in detail.
