NASA Spots a Solar-Style Magnetic 'Switchback' at Earth for the First Time
NASA's four MMS spacecraft detected a magnetic switchback near Earth for the first time.
A switchback is a sudden zigzag reversal in the magnetic field's direction.
These kinks had only ever been seen near the Sun, by the Parker Solar Probe.
It formed where solar wind plasma reconnects with Earth's magnetic field.
Scientists can now study switchbacks close to home instead of flying into the Sun's corona.
