An inoperative PAN means no ITR, no refunds, and TDS deducted at up to 20% instead of 10%.

NRIs, residents of Assam, Meghalaya and J&K, people over 80, and foreign nationals are exempt.

After paying and submitting, allow up to 30 days for the PAN to turn operative again.
