The 5-Year King Who Named the Rupee in Your Pocket
The word rupee comes from Sanskrit 'rupya', meaning wrought silver.
Sher Shah Suri standardised the silver rupiya at about 178 grains (~11.6 g) around 1540.
The Mughals and the British kept his coin's weight, so it survived nearly 500 years.
India only went decimal in 1957, splitting the rupee into 100 paise.
The ₹ symbol is new — designed by D. Udaya Kumar and adopted in 2010.
