A New Walking Shark Just Got Named — and It May Already Be in Trouble

A new walking shark, Hemiscyllium dudgeonae, was named in a study published 15 June 2026.
These sharks 'walk' on the seafloor using their fins and can survive hours with almost no oxygen.
Walking sharks are the youngest sharks on Earth, having evolved only about 9 million years ago.
Found only around a small cluster of islands off eastern PNG, its tiny range makes it vulnerable.
Coral bleaching, coastal building and palm-oil expansion threaten it before it's even fully studied.
