27 New Species Found in a Peru Region of 200,000 People

A 38-day survey in Peru's Alto Mayo logged 2,046 species, 27 of them entirely new to science.
The landscape holds more than 200,000 people, so finding four new mammals stunned researchers.
Standouts include a blob-headed armored catfish and a rare semi-aquatic, carnivorous mouse.
At least 49 recorded species are threatened, including two critically endangered primates.
Indigenous Awajún communities helped guide the expedition across eight survey zones.
