Athena Statue Found Face-Down in a 2,000-Year-Old Theatre
A nearly 2-metre white marble statue of Athena was found face-down in theatre rubble at Laodicea, Turkey.
It was unearthed on 31 March 2026 by a Pamukkale University team led by Prof. Celal Simsek.
The statue dates stylistically to the Augustan period (27 BCE-14 CE) and wears a Medusa-headed aegis.
Laodicea is the 'lukewarm' city criticised in the Book of Revelation's seven churches.
The head and part of an arm are still missing, and the search of the rubble continues.
