Brahmi Decoded: How India Got Ashoka Back in 1837
Brahmi died out by ~350-500 CE; for centuries Indians stood before Ashoka's pillars unable to read a word.
James Prinsep cracked Brahmi in 1837 using repeated short inscriptions at Sanchi that all ended in 'danam' (gift).
The edicts called their author 'Devanampiya Piyadasi'; George Turnour matched that title to Ashoka via Sri Lankan chronicles.
Decipherment instantly gave India a verifiable 3rd-century-BCE emperor and a fixed date anchor for its ancient past.
Prinsep died in 1840 at 40; Kolkata's Prinsep Ghat still carries his name.
