Comet 3I/ATLAS May Be Older Than the Sun, Webb Data Suggests
Webb found 3I/ATLAS holds about 30 times more deuterium than any comet born in our solar system.
Its low carbon-13 signature points to formation 10-12 billion years ago, before the Sun existed.
3I/ATLAS is only the third interstellar visitor ever confirmed, after 'Oumuamua and Borisov.
The findings were published in Nature on June 22, 2026, led by NASA's Martin Cordiner.
The icy chemistry suggests it formed in a deeply frozen, ancient corner of our galaxy.
