A Shark That Walks: New Species Found in Papua New Guinea
A new walking shark, Hemiscyllium dudgeonae, was named off Papua New Guinea on 15 June 2026.
It is the 10th species in the genus and the first new one described since 2013.
Walking sharks use four fins to stroll the seafloor and can survive hours on very little oxygen.
First spotted on a March 2025 night dive near Milne Bay; 12 individuals were found in days.
Its tiny range makes it highly vulnerable to coral loss, fishing and coastal development.
