PAN Card 2026: How to Apply Online and Track It Fast

Getting a PAN card in 2026 is faster and cheaper than most people assume, and for a large number of applicants it no longer involves a single sheet of paper. If your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile number, you can hold a valid PAN in roughly the time it takes to make tea. But the rules tightened on 1 April 2026, and a few of the old habits — using Aadhaar for everything, hunting for Form 49A — will now get your application rejected. Here is a clean, current walkthrough of how to apply for a new PAN card online and follow it to your door.

Two routes, and how to pick yours

There are two genuinely different ways to get a fresh PAN, and choosing wrong wastes both time and money.

The first is Instant e-PAN on the Income Tax e-filing portal. It is free, fully paperless, and meant for individual Indian citizens aged 18 and above who have an Aadhaar number linked to a working mobile. You fill no form. The system pulls your details straight from Aadhaar, you confirm with an OTP, and a digitally signed PAN in PDF form is issued, usually within about 10 minutes. This is the right route for most salaried people, students and first-time taxpayers.

The second route is a full application through Protean (the agency formerly known as NSDL) or UTIITSL. You need this if you are an NRI, a HUF, a firm, a company or a trust, if you want a printed card mailed to you, or if your name and date of birth do not match Aadhaar cleanly. It costs a small fee and takes longer, but it is the proper channel for anyone the Instant service shuts out.

A blunt rule of thumb: if you are an adult individual with Aadhaar and you only need the number, use Instant e-PAN. If you need a physical card or you are anything other than a resident individual, go to Protean or UTIITSL.

What changed on 1 April 2026

The documentation rules shifted this year, and it trips up people who assume Aadhaar still covers everything.

  • Aadhaar is no longer accepted as proof of date of birth. You now have to attach a separate document — a birth certificate, Class 10 board certificate, passport, voter ID or driving licence — that carries your date of birth.
  • Anyone born on or after 1 October 2023 must submit a birth certificate issued by the municipal authority. There is no substitute for this group.
  • Your name must match your Aadhaar. Mismatches in spelling or initials between PAN and Aadhaar are now a common cause of rejection, so fix the Aadhaar first if needed.
  • A mobile number is mandatory, and a physical residential or office address is expected on the form.

The forms changed too. The long-familiar Form 49A (for residents) and Form 49AA (for foreign applicants) are being discontinued after 31 March 2026 and replaced by a new set of numbered forms (Forms 93 to 96). In practice the online portals route you to the correct form automatically, so you rarely type the form number yourself — but if a website is still pushing 49A at you, it is out of date.

Applying for a free Instant e-PAN, step by step

This is the fastest path. Keep your Aadhaar-linked phone next to you for the OTP.

  1. Open the Income Tax e-filing portal and choose the Instant e-PAN option on the homepage.
  2. Click Get New e-PAN and type your 12-digit Aadhaar number, then tick the confirmation box.
  3. Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  4. Review the details the system has imported from Aadhaar, validate your email if asked, and submit.
  5. Within minutes you receive an acknowledgement, and once allotted, the e-PAN PDF can be downloaded right there.

The e-PAN that comes out of this process is a valid PAN for every purpose — opening accounts, filing returns, KYC. It is not a lesser version of a card. If you later want a laminated card in hand, you can order a physical reprint separately.

Applying through Protean or UTIITSL for a physical card

When Instant e-PAN does not fit, the full application is straightforward but asks for more.

Go to the Protean or UTIITSL PAN service, select a new PAN application, and pick how you want to verify yourself. Aadhaar-based eKYC lets you authenticate digitally and skip couriering papers; the scan-based and physical options exist for those who cannot use eKYC. Fill in your name, date of birth, address, contact details and source of income, upload the supporting documents, pay, and submit. You will get an acknowledgement slip with a reference number — keep it.

Fees vary slightly by provider and by where the card is sent. As a guide, the e-PAN delivered by email costs around ₹66, while a physical card dispatched within India is roughly ₹107. Sending a card overseas costs significantly more, in the region of ₹1,000 or above, because of postage. Always confirm the exact figure on the payment screen, since the two agencies price marginally differently and revise charges from time to time.

PAN 2.0 and the QR-code card

You will see a lot of noise about PAN 2.0, the government's ₹1,435-crore overhaul of the entire PAN and TAN system. The headline feature is a redesigned card with a dynamic QR code that carries your name, date of birth, photo and PAN, and reflects the latest data on file when scanned. The bigger ambition is to fold the three separate portals into one unified platform.

Two things matter for an ordinary applicant. First, you do not need a new PAN number — your existing one stays the same, and every current holder is automatically eligible for the upgraded design. Second, requesting the QR-enabled e-PAN by email is free, while a fresh printed copy carries a small fee. As of mid-2026 the unified portal is still rolling out in phases, so for now you continue to apply and pay through the existing Protean, UTIITSL and e-filing channels.

Tracking your application until it arrives

The waiting game has clear checkpoints depending on how you applied.

For a Protean application, use the 15-digit acknowledgement (token) number on the track-status page; you can also follow updates by SMS. For UTIITSL, the coupon number from your acknowledgement does the same job. For Instant e-PAN, return to the e-filing portal, choose Check Status / Download PAN, enter your Aadhaar and an OTP, and you will see whether the PAN is allotted and ready to download.

A physical card usually reaches you within about 10 to 15 working days once the application is accepted, with the e-PAN often available earlier. If the status sticks on an objection, it is almost always a document or name mismatch — the very things the April 2026 rules tightened. Fix the flagged detail, and the rest moves quickly.

One last housekeeping point worth not ignoring: a PAN only stays usable if it is linked to Aadhaar. An unlinked PAN turns inoperative, which can block refunds and stall high-value transactions, so once your shiny new number is in hand, make sure that link is in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Instant e-PAN really free?

Yes. The Income Tax e-filing portal issues a digitally signed e-PAN at no cost to individuals who have a valid Aadhaar linked to an active mobile number. There is no fee and no form to fill.

How long does a new PAN card take in 2026?

Instant e-PAN is usually generated within about 10 minutes. A full application through Protean or UTIITSL typically takes 10 to 15 working days for the physical card, with the e-PAN often emailed sooner.

Can I apply for PAN with only my Aadhaar from April 2026?

Not for date of birth. From 1 April 2026 Aadhaar is no longer accepted as proof of birth, so you must add a separate document such as a birth certificate, Class 10 marksheet, passport, voter ID or driving licence.

How do I track my PAN application status?

Use the 15-digit acknowledgement number on the Protean portal, the coupon number on UTIITSL, or for Instant e-PAN enter your Aadhaar and the OTP under 'Check Status / Download PAN' on the e-filing site.
