Check Your EPF Balance in 2026: SMS, Missed Call and UMANG
Most salaried Indians have a quietly growing pile of money they almost never look at: their provident fund. A slice of your salary goes in every month, your employer matches part of it, and it compounds at a rate most bank deposits can't touch. Yet ask people their EPF balance and you'll usually get a shrug. The good news is that checking it takes seconds, costs nothing, and you don't need to wait for your HR department to send a statement.
Here is exactly how to do an EPF balance check in 2026 — by missed call, by SMS, on the UMANG app and on the EPFO website — along with the one thing that has to be in place first, and a few traps worth knowing.
First, the thing everyone forgets: activate your UAN
Every method below depends on two boxes being ticked. Your Universal Account Number (UAN) must be activated, and your mobile number must be registered with EPFO. The UAN is the 12-digit number that stays with you for life and stitches together every PF account from every job you've held.
This matters because activation rates are dismal. EPFO has said that of the 1.26 crore UANs allotted in one recent year, only about 35% were actually activated by members. If your UAN is dormant, a missed call returns nothing.
Activating it is now easier than it used to be. EPFO has rolled out Aadhaar-based face authentication, where your identity is verified through a face scan on your phone and your details are auto-filled from the Aadhaar database, with the mobile number matched to the one linked to Aadhaar. You can also activate the older way on the EPFO member portal using your UAN, Aadhaar and an OTP. Do this once and every shortcut below comes alive.
The fastest route: a missed call
If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this. Give a missed call to 9966044425 from the mobile number registered with your UAN.
The call disconnects on its own after two rings, so you pay nothing. Within seconds you get an SMS carrying your member ID, last contribution and total balance. There's no app, no password and no typing — which is why it's the method to use when the EPFO site is crawling or you're standing in a queue.
Two conditions, again: the call has to come from your registered number, and your UAN should be seeded with your KYC details (bank account, Aadhaar, PAN). If the details aren't linked, the reply will be incomplete.
Prefer text? The SMS method, in any language
The SMS service is just as quick and works on the most basic handset. From your registered mobile, send a text to 7738299899 in this format:
- Type EPFOHO UAN ENG and send it to get details in English.
- Swap the last three letters for your language: HIN for Hindi, MAR for Marathi, TAM for Tamil, TEL for Telugu, KAN for Kannada, GUJ for Gujarati, PUN for Punjabi, MAL for Malayalam, BEN for Bengali.
EPFO supports the service in 10 languages, and those three letters at the end are simply the language code. A point people miss: the message must go from the number registered with EPFO. Send it from a friend's phone and you'll get nothing back, by design — it's a privacy safeguard, not a glitch.
Standard SMS charges from your operator apply to the outgoing text, but EPFO doesn't charge you a paisa for the reply.
UMANG: your full passbook in your pocket
The missed call and SMS give you a headline number. When you want the detail — every monthly credit, the employee and employer split, interest entries — use the government's UMANG app, which pulls together hundreds of public services in one place.
- Install UMANG from the Play Store or App Store and register or log in with your mobile number.
- Search for EPFO inside the app, or go to Services and find it under Social Security.
- Open Employee Centric Services and choose View Passbook.
- Enter your UAN, then the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
You can now scroll your full passbook on the phone, account by account. UMANG also lets you raise and track claims, so it's worth keeping installed beyond just balance-peeking. EPFO has additionally been pushing face authentication for some UAN services inside the app, which spares you password resets.
The desktop way: the EPFO passbook portal
If you'd rather see everything on a bigger screen or download a PDF, use the EPFO Member Passbook portal on a browser.
- Go to the passbook login page and sign in with your UAN, password and the captcha.
- Complete the OTP step if prompted.
- Pick the relevant Member ID — you'll see more than one if you've changed jobs and not merged accounts.
- View, download or print the passbook.
One genuinely useful quirk: because the portal accepts your UAN and password, you can log in even if you've temporarily lost access to your registered SIM, where the SMS and missed call routes would leave you stuck. DigiLocker also stores a copy of your EPF passbook if you've linked it there.
What the number actually means in 2026
A balance is only motivating if you know how hard it's working. EPF was credited at 8.25% for FY 2024-25, and EPFO's Central Board of Trustees has recommended the same 8.25% for FY 2025-26, subject to the finance ministry's nod. That's a tax-advantaged, government-backed return that comfortably beats a normal fixed deposit.
A few practical points to keep in mind:
- Interest is credited once a year, usually after the rate is finalised, so don't panic if your interest line appears later than the monthly contributions.
- The passbook can lag your salary slip by days or weeks, because the amount shows only after your employer files the return and it's reconciled. A gap is rarely a missing deposit.
- Withdrawals and transfers have moved faster under the EPFO 3.0 push, with the auto-settlement limit raised to ₹5 lakh and many claims clearing on Aadhaar OTP and self-certification alone.
Quick fixes when nothing works
If the missed call goes unanswered or the SMS bounces, run through this short checklist before assuming the worst.
- Number mismatch. The single most common reason. Confirm the SIM in your phone is the exact number registered with EPFO; get HR to update it if you've switched.
- UAN not activated. Activate it once via the portal or face authentication and try again.
- KYC not seeded. If your Aadhaar, PAN or bank account isn't linked to the UAN, replies come back blank or partial.
- Multiple member IDs. Old PF accounts from previous jobs may sit unmerged. Use the online transfer facility to pull them into your current UAN so the total reflects everything you've earned.
Checking your PF takes less time than reading this paragraph. Make it a quarterly habit, and the next time someone asks what their EPF balance is, you'll be the one who actually knows.
