If you moved house, married, or simply never touched your Aadhaar since it was first issued, this week was supposed to be your last cheap chance to fix it. The old free-update deadline fell on 14 June 2026 — today. Instead of letting it lapse, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) quietly bought everyone another year. A memorandum dated 13 May 2026 pushed the free online document update on the myAadhaar portal all the way to 14 June 2027.

That single change removes the panic from the most common Aadhaar chore: updating your address and personal details online. But "free" comes with fine print, and the part of the process people actually struggle with — changing to a genuinely new address — still works differently from a simple document refresh. Here is exactly how it all fits together in 2026, and the precise steps to get it done from your phone.

Two different jobs people keep confusing

The first thing to get straight is that UIDAI treats two situations very differently, and mixing them up is why so many people end up paying when they didn't expect to.

• Document update: You are not really changing any information. Your name and address stay the same, but you upload fresh, valid copies of your proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA) so UIDAI's records stay current. This is what the agency keeps urging older cardholders to do — especially anyone whose Aadhaar was issued ten or more years ago and never refreshed.
• Demographic update: You are changing the actual data — a new address after a move, a corrected spelling, a date of birth fix, or a gender change. This needs a supporting document that backs the new detail.
